Process Control for Perfect Color Fidelity
The new generation of benchtop sphere spectrophotometers adds innovative optimization features for color measurement and management
In complex global supply chains, there are many points where color errors can occur. Cumulative errors throughout design, specification, color matching, manufacturing, and the assembly of raw materials, components, and final products can lead to scrap and rework; moreover, if these errors progress further along the supply chain before being mitigated, the costs become even higher. Therefore, color must be measured consistently at various checkpoints in the color supply chain, including processes such as specification, color matching, approval, and quality control.
Multiple Instruments Can Affect Color Fidelity
In the most efficient supply chains, specifiers transmit their color standards to all partners using digital color data to ensure color fidelity. However, even with the best efforts to follow such standard operating procedures, color fidelity can be compromised when users operate under different conditions with varying instrument settings and fail to pay sufficient attention to the conditions under which color samples are measured. Additionally, partners across the supply chain may use instruments of different brands, models, and ages, or even outdated technologies. This can lead to further issues in the reliability of color decisions.
The new X-Rite Ci7800 as a master instrument and its cost-effective compatible version, the Ci7600 spectrophotometer, represent a significant leap in producing and maintaining high-quality color measurement data throughout the color supply chain. Unlike any previous industrial spectrophotometers, the Ci7800 and Ci7600 sphere spectrophotometers, when used with X-Rite's Color iControl software, can be adapted to any color supply chain—including those that consistently use instruments from other suppliers. Furthermore, when used with Color iQC or Color iMatch, the Ci7800 and Ci7600 series spectrophotometers automatically ensure correct instrument settings, track the execution of measurement requirements, and record an image of each measured color sample. The result is a seamless, automated color measurement and management process that easily identifies invalid measurements and sample defects, while providing industry-leading inter-instrument agreement and repeatability.
The new generation of sphere spectrophotometers creates valuable visual and digital audit trails that no other brand or instrument can provide. The built-in digital camera allows capturing an image of every measurement, creating a visual record that can be retrieved if questions about measurement validity arise later. Any smudges, cracks, wrinkles, or other flaws on the sample that might affect the measurement result can be clearly seen in the sample image captured along with the measurement data. This data stream also includes all settings (required settings and any actual settings used that may circumvent the requirements) as well as the instrument's temperature and humidity conditions at the time of measurement.
Historical Data: Preservation and Protection
Since many brand owners and specifiers rely on historical data developed over years and used throughout the supply chain as the basis for standards or colorant databases, the X-Rite Ci7800 and Ci7600 series benchtop sphere spectrophotometers can be configured to read colors in a way that closely matches the results from the traditional instruments originally used to create these valuable standards and databases—on which many businesses depend.
Beyond
X-Rite's Ci7800 and Ci7600 instruments also come equipped with a range of newly designed features that further enhance the value of X-Rite's new products, elevating their performance level beyond any other existing products on the market. These include:
• Faster and more accurate measurements through laser targeting capability, which allows operators to see the exact spot on the sample where transmission measurements will be taken.
• Greater measurement stability under a variety of temperature and humidity conditions compared to current instruments in the field, as these conditions can affect color measurement.
• A modular design that facilitates on-site repairs, essentially eliminating the need for factory returns—which often leave instruments unavailable for extended periods.
Additional Software Options to Enhance Productivity and Reliability
By adding selected software solutions to support the X-Rite Ci7800/Ci7600, productivity is increased, and costly errors and rework are reduced.
• NetProfiler verifies, optimizes, and certifies the performance of all color measurement equipment—across a single plant or globally.
• Color iMatch ensures efficient and accurate colorant formulation to meet customer-provided standards.
• Color iQC eliminates guesswork in evaluating standard colors and in the manufacturing process of raw materials and finished products.
• Color iQC Taper is a color sequencing solution that uses CIELab data (representing rolls) to place data in a sequence (tapering) to minimize color differences between adjacent rolls.
The process control provided by X-Rite's new Ci7800 and Ci7600 truly achieves perfect color fidelity. It sets a new standard for measuring, managing, and communicating color data, while offering unprecedented audit trails in a more stable and repeatable data package. It is also easier to service than any other benchtop sphere spectrophotometer on the market.
